The Role
The Graduate School/Department of Computer Science is recruiting for a Research Software Engineer to contribute to the BBSRC funded “Artificial Intelligence in the Biosciences” network to provide specialist skills in machine learning, deep learning, knowledge discovery and data science.
The Research Software Engineer is expected to provide assistance in facilitating software development, data analysis and access to HPC, contribute to (training) events, development of training materials, information gathering, and technical support for the development of a repository (as a go-to location for data and knowledge for AI in biosciences).
It is expected that the job-holder will normally have, or will have made substantial progress to the award of a PhD qualification, as evidenced by externally peer-reviewed publications, or has equivalent RSE experience.

What you’ll do
This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.
- To implement, in collaboration with members of the community and the network management team, appropriate machine learning, deep learning, knowledge discovery and data science techniques
- To be able to discuss HPC requirements and to provide technical support to other project team members
- To be able to contribute to technical reports and academic research papers
- Respond flexibly to changes in deadlines or objectives
- Contribute to the project, determining the most appropriate methodology, collating and reporting on results
- Contribute to (training) events
- To develop training materials, such as example code and worksheets
- To provide technical support for the development of a code and data repository
- To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required
Essential
- PhD in Computer Science (or about to obtain) or equivalent RSE experience
- Experience in using HPC/GPU facilities
- Experience in the use of machine learning, deep learning, knowledge discovery and data science techniques
- To have an understanding of appropriate AI and/or HPC training material (covering development and/or delivery)
- Having an understanding of repository development
- Track record in academic publications
- Experience in assisting others in using HPC/GPU facilities
- Experience in Linux, Python, SLURM
- Excellent communication skills, as part of the role will involve interacting with the scientific community
- An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of biosciences.
- Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level A1.*
